In North Maharashtra, Mahayuti settles score of Lok Sabha election
Mahayuti Reclaims Stronghold in North Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024
After facing setbacks in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, where the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) won four out of six seats in North Maharashtra, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance staged a strong comeback in the assembly elections. The alliance secured XX of the 47 seats across five districts—Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Jalgaon, Dhule, and Nandurbar—reaffirming its dominance in the region, which has been its bastion since 2014.
Congress Suffers Significant Losses
The Congress faced a crushing defeat, losing long-held strongholds like Sangamner and Akkalkuwa. Veteran Congress leaders Balasaheb Thorat and KC Padavi, who had represented these constituencies since 1985 and 1990 respectively, were unseated, marking a significant shift in voter sentiment.
Bhujbal Retains Yevla Amid Challenges
In Yevla, state cabinet minister and senior OBC leader Chhagan Bhujbal of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) managed to retain his seat. However, his victory margin dropped significantly, from over 50,000 votes in 2019 to just 26,400 this time. This came despite active campaigns against him by Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange-Patil and NCP founder Sharad Pawar.
Shifting Dynamics Since 2019
In the 2019 assembly polls, the BJP and the undivided Shiv Sena had jointly won 22 of the 47 seats in the region, while Congress and the NCP claimed 20. For the 2024 elections, the MVA focused on key issues such as tribal unrest over reservation, unemployment, anti-incumbency, and declining prices for crops like soybean, cotton, and maize. Despite the MVA's efforts and its earlier Lok Sabha success, the Mahayuti alliance prevailed, signaling a shift in regional dynamics.
